Acupuncture for back pain

Back pain is one of the most common problems people seek acupuncture treatment for. Most of us will suffer from back problems at some point in our lives, due to injuries or more chronic conditions that can worsen over time. In Chinese medicine, pain is always the result of a blockage in the flow of energy (Qi). This is certainly the case in acute pain following an injury. But there are also underlying predispositions which may be very strong in some people – the most common one being a deficiency of Kidney-Qi.

Kidney-Qi naturally decreases as we get older, but in some individuals where it may be constitutionally weak, the decrease occurs earlier and to a greater extent.

Acupuncture works on both levels. On the one hand it provides pain relief by unblocking and restoring the free flow of energy, reducing inflammation and stiffness, while improving overall mobility.

On the other, it nourishes and strengthens your constitutional energy, which helps to get the back stronger and less prone to injuries.

This results in shorter healing times and reduction of pain medication in general.

Acupuncture for back pain has been researched extensively and is recommended by NICE.
